Convert Excel and CSV files to VCF vCards on Mac

Importer for Contacts brings tabular data into Apple's Contacts app, with considerably more options than the import function in Apple's Contacts app itself. It converts Excel, CSV and tab-delimited files to vCards, maps every field automatically, supports custom labels as well, and restores contact lists (groups) from vCards when a vCard holds that information. Native to macOS, it supports every field of a contact in the Apple ecosystem. It's ideal for anyone who regularly needs to import data into Apple's Contacts app.

Imports Excel files
Directly import .xlsx Excel files, including embedded pictures. There is no detour through CSV.
Handles tricky CSV files
Successfully imports CSV files that Apple Contacts refuses to open, with an interactive encoding preview to get special characters right.
Restores groups from vCards
Import vCards that contain group information and let the app create the groups and assign the imported contacts automatically, with no sorting by hand afterwards.
Automatic group assignment
Add a column of comma-separated group names to your CSV file and the app then files the contacts into those groups during the import. Groups that do not exist yet are created.
Smart field mapping
Maps fields automatically and remembers the mappings for future imports. Mappings can be saved as separate import setups for recurring imports.
Extract labeled values
Extract comma- or line-separated labeled values from a single field and import them into separate contact fields. An example: “work: (123) 456-789, home: (987) 654-321”.
Suitable for large files
Import workbooks with tens of thousands of rows while keeping memory use low. Let the app split large numbers of vCard contacts into separate files automatically, if the target app has limits.
Full privacy guaranteed
Importer for Contacts doesn't collect any data. All conversion takes place locally on your Mac.

How to import contacts from Excel or CSV into Apple Contacts

  1. Open your file

    Open an Excel workbook, a CSV file, tab-delimited text, or a vCard in the app. For text files, adjust the encoding preview until special characters like ü, ç and ß look right. Excel files need no encoding setting.

  2. Check the field mapping

    Review the mapping the app proposes for your column headers and correct it where needed. Custom labels are supported. The next import with the same column headers reuses that mapping.

  3. Set the import options

    Pick the account to import into and map a column of comma-separated group names to the Groups field. Groups that do not exist yet are created.

  4. Import or convert

    Import directly into Apple's Contacts app, or convert the records to vCard 3.0 files. Existing contacts stay untouched. Duplicate detection collects matches in the OLD DUPLICATES and NEW DUPLICATES groups.

Not with this app. Importer for Contacts writes into Apple Contacts and to vCard files. Exporter for Contacts 2 goes the opposite way, out of Apple Contacts into Excel, CSV, Outlook OLM or Google Contacts CSV.
